The Eder Dam is located in the state of Hesse in Germany and was constructed between 1908 and 1914. The dam was built to supply hydroelectric power to the nearby town of Kassel and also to serve as a reservoir for water supply.
During World War II, the Eder Dam was targeted by the British Royal Air Force as part of Operation Chastise, also known as the Dambusters raid. On May 16, 1943, a group of specially trained RAF pilots flew in low over the dam and dropped spinning bombs that caused significant damage to the structure. The water released by the breach flooded nearby villages and caused extensive damage.
Today, the Eder Dam is still in operation and provides hydroelectric power to the region, as well as being a popular tourist attraction. The dam is over 45 meters high and 400 meters wide, and visitors can take guided tours to learn about its history and construction.
